MN7181- THE ETHICAL CONTEXT OF HRM

The Ethical context of HRM

The term‘ ethics' is usually applied to persons (ethics comes from the Greek ethos, meaning character) and‘ morality' to acts and behaviour (moral comes from the Latin moralise, meaning customs or manners). It refers to that aspect of human experience which involves making unbiased judgments as to the ultimate rightness and wrongness of actions and the values to which priority should be given in making personal, social and political decisions (Maclagan, 1998). Ethics is about laws or values that help us make the right and wrong decisions (Hamlin et al., 2001).

Human Resource Management (HRM) is about how to manage people, backed by a number of theories about individuals and organizations ' behaviour. It is concerned with the contribution it can make to improving organizational effectiveness through people but it should be equally concerned with the ethical dimension–how people should be treated in accordance with a set of moral values (Armstrong & Taylor, 2014).

More Business organizations are concern to keep the ethical standard of their organization. HR plays a key role in maintaining an organization's ethical culture intact. It is important to maintain the ethical standard in an organization to maintain discipline.

“All HR practices have an ethical foundation. HR deals with human behavior's practical consequences "(Johnson, 2003).

HR professionals need to raise awareness of ethical issues, encourage ethical behaviour, generally disseminate ethical practices to line managers, communicate ethical codes of conduct, ensure that people know about ethical behaviour, maintain enforcement and track agreements (Woodall & Winstanley, 2000).

HR should follow three approaches: the first is to ensure that HR policies and actions taken to enforce them meet appropriate ethical standards; the second is to criticize unethical behavior on the part of management (Armstrong & Taylor, 2014) as role models leading by example and living and breathing good ethical behaviour. HR will enforce ethical standards from the recruitment process (e.g.: Asking for School Character Certificate), induction (e.g. Educating the rules and principles on how to behave in an organization), training (Concerning how trainees are to behave in training), communication (e.g.: Whistle Blowing Policy), performance management (e.g. searching for letters of violation).
